Are the people who are most easily distracted the most creative?

Are you often told that you seem to have your head in the clouds? If this is your case, you may be a very creative person.

These people are often “criticized” for not paying attention to others or for wandering around in their imaginations in unproductive ways, as if they were less intelligent than others.

Since we were children, we have been asked to stay focused on what the teacher and our parents tell us. When we grow up we punish ourselves if we spend more than 5 minutes thinking about our future or daydreaming.

Did you know that the most famous artists and scientists in history had “problems” in concentrating?

This is the case of Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein. Distraction and creation actually go hand in hand.

This subject has been the subject of a study carried out at Harvard University for several years. The study revealed that having several ideas at the same time in the head, could help us to understand more easily and more quickly certain phenomena, but also to find an immediate and valid answer to our questions.

The constant flow of information into your mind promotes creativity.  It is likely that you have the ability to solve your problems more effectively.

“A nothing distracts me”

One might think that this is a confession of a person undergoing therapy or treatment to stop their addiction.

At first glance, we tend to think of being distracted as something wrong. However, in reality, it is a reaction of the brain to rest, to stop a task that it does not like, to work on other aspects, etc.

People who have the worry (or the ability) to be distracted by the mere fact of seeing a fly fly, can now blame the neurons in the upper parietal lobe of their brain.

The more distraction there is in your life, the more brainpower you will have.

However, scientists still do not understand what exactly is happening in this case. To date, the theory would be that having more neurons could help maintain focus and concentration, not the other way around.

One of the hypotheses analyzed so far is that the brain, as it ages, also destroys some neurons and some nerve connections.

However, this process helps in controlling attention. If we follow this idea, people who have the most gray matter would therefore be more easily distracted and more “childish”.

It is true that you can have more or less intense periods of distraction depending on the stress, anxiety, fatigue or your mood.

However, when a person is naturally distracted, the explanation goes further.

The unusual link between distraction and creativity

Even though our culture and our upbringing drive us to always stay focused, this is not always possible. We are neither robots nor machines, and often creativity goes hand in hand with distraction.

 But how is this possible?

According to a study, people who do not manage to stay focused on a task have more “leaks” at the level of their sensory filters, ie at the level of the barriers that allow us to isolate ourselves from everything that is happening. passes around us as we undertake a particular task.

These barriers have the capacity to detect nearby stimuli and to remove them to help us not to distract us.

While it is true that these leaks affect the ability to concentrate, they also allow joining ideas and shaping a project, one of the key characteristics of a creative person.

Distractions can come from anything and everything and can be related to any sense, be it hearing, sight or smell.

Have you ever been told you are in the Moon? Well, congratulations! You now know it’s a compliment, not a criticism.
